Electric Power Steering – How It Works

DC Electronics electric power steering systems are designed to be either fitted in-line with the existing steering column, or the electric assistance motor can be directly mounted to the steering rack.

Regardless of which electric power steering system you choose, the principle is the same. A torque sensor detects the amount of steering input from the driver. This torque signal is fed into the electric power steering ECU, which then delivers the appropriate amount of assistance to the electric motor.

The advantage of choosing an electric power steering system is that it negates the need for hydraulics. Electric power steering systems are far lighter than comparable hydraulic systems and have no hydraulic pump continuously dragging on the engine which improves horsepower and increase fuel efficiency or range if fitted to an electric vehicle.

The weight of steering assistance on our electric power steering systems is adjustable, with data also being available over CAN bus for some of our systems. DC Electronics’ standard electric power steering systems can be retro fitted to existing vehicles or new designs.

With an extensive core range, our electric power steering systems can be fitted to both crewed or autonomous vehicles, regardless of the power plant (traditional internal combustion engine or an electric source).
